Background

I am the Dr. Samuel Burney Hay, Class of 1916, Managing Director of the Martin Institute for Public Good and Director of the William F. and Betty G. Mulliss Center for Civic Engagement at 91导航.

For more than 30 years, I have worked with colleges and universities to build reciprocal relationships with their communities while creating educational experiences that prepare students to become engaged citizens and leaders.

At Davidson, I serve as Managing Director of the Martin Institute for Public Good and provide strategic direction and oversight for the William F. and Betty G. Mulliss Center for Civic Engagement. My work includes developing strategies that strengthen community engagement, expand community-engaged learning, and deepen connections among teaching, learning, and community partnerships. I have led efforts that advance community engagement as an integral part of the college鈥檚 educational mission and strengthen the connections between the college and its communities.

I work with faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community partners to create opportunities for collaboration, learning, and leadership. I support faculty in developing community-engaged curricula and building authentic partnerships, while working with community partners to foster reciprocal relationships that benefit both the college and the communities we serve. My courses emphasize experiential learning, community leadership, democratic engagement, critical reflection, and the development of personal and social responsibility.

Just prior to joining Davidson, I served on the faculty in Syracuse University鈥檚 Higher Education program, where I taught graduate courses focused on college student development, organization and leadership in higher education, and innovative pedagogies. Throughout my career, I have worked to strengthen higher education鈥檚 public purpose by preparing educators and leaders to create transformative learning environments and advance the mission of colleges and universities.
