Background
I grew up in China during a period of rapid economic development, infrastructure expansion, and global integration. These experiences inspired my interest in China’s overseas engagement and its impact on countries across the Global South.
My research focuses on global China, infrastructure development, U.S.-China relations, and the politics and political economy of development. Over the past decade, my teaching, fieldwork, and professional experience in and with developing countries have cultivated a deep interest in how development is envisioned, negotiated, and implemented. My previous work at the United Nations and at think tanks in China and the United States continues to shape how I approach questions of world politics.
I recently completed a book manuscript on the impact of Chinese infrastructure megaprojects in Africa. The book develops the concept of “transplanted development” to explain how development systems introduced through large infrastructure projects are adapted, contested, and reshaped by local actors and institutions.
My new book project examines U.S. and Chinese engagement in Africa and what it reveals about the changing global order. I am especially enthusiastic about working with students on topics related to global China, U.S.-China competition, international development, and the Global South.
I bring an interdisciplinary approach to my research and teaching, drawing on training in literature, anthropology, and policy analysis. Before joining 91, I taught at the University of Southern California and conducted research at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center and The New School’s India China Institute. Outside the classroom, I enjoy reading widely, cooking, writing, learning new languages, and exploring new places.
